Preview: Jen Cloher @ Deaf Institute, Manchester, 14.02.18

The last (and first) time she performed in the UK, September 2017, Cloher told the London Lexington crowd that “it’s a real privilege to be standing on a stage on the other side of the world.” “Most of us don’t make it this far,” she added coyly, “it’s only took me four albums and twelve years to get here.”

It has indeed been a struggle for Cloher, an arduous journey whose story is told bravely and emotively in the album she’s touring. A magnificent follow-up to In Blood Memory, Cloher’s fourth record sings of artistic frustration, envy and admiration in the face of her younger partner Courtney Barnett’s blast to global fame. In heart-wrenching tracks like ‘Strong Woman’, she reflects on her early years of navigating her sexuality, closing with a tribute to her late mother who she casts as a Maori warrior.

The inspiring narrative that runs through Jen Cloher will no doubt be reproduced tenfold on stage by the Australian artist known for tugging at the heartstrings. This is definitely not one to miss, in particular for fans of the likes of Cat Power, Carpenters and Daughter.
